My apologies for the gap in posting...I had an encounter with grappa on Saturday.
I got up early for croissant and coffee and then we were off to pick up my father's friend Daniel for another hike through the mountains and a final attempt at mushroom hunting. We drove about 15 minutes up the closest mountain road and then walked for about 2 hours with the dogs. We found nothing edible and so we paused for a beer and then headed back for lunch.
Lunch was grilled steak rubbed with herbed butter and french steak fries. Daniel pulled out the red wine and some whiskey on account of me being from the US. I told him that I'd pass on the whiskey and that I'd have the red wine, saying in english "when in rome...". My father quickly translated the phrase to Daniel who speaks no english at all and he quickly disappeared into the house with a smile on his face. A minute later he emerged from the house with a giant bottle of local grappa and bade us "to do as the Romans do". It was good grappa and I had about 3 shots. I was fine at that point, but I made the mistake afterward- I kept finishing my wine. What I didn't realize at first is that if I had just left a small residue of wine in my glass, Daniel wouldn't have continued to refill it. It wasn't until the 4th glass that I even realized he had been pouring me more... When we left after a long conversation about politics (I know I was drunk) I had a massive headache. While it is possible the headache came from following the conversation, I'm going to blame the alcohol. Maybe it was something in the grappa.
I took a nap when we got back to the house and then tried to go for a bike ride before dinner, but I just wasn't feeling good enough. Dinner was a nice vegetable stew and it certainly helped take the edge off the headache, but even today, 2 days later I feel off.
